ASYE Assessment and Portfolio

skills for care

Each ASYE will be required to record their progress via the Critical Reflection Log. Alongside this the Assessor will also record their assessment of the ASYE's progress.

Holistic Assessment and Portfolio -The Assessment will measure professional capability in the employment context. The standards for judging the NQSWs are benchmarked and assessed against the criteria set out within the PCF / KSS for the ASYE level.

The principles of 'holistic' assessment are central to the use of the PCF / KSS. Rather than focussing on a 'single point' of assessment, or isolated skill or capability, evidence will be accumulated and reviewed over the year to show sufficiency in a range of essential skills, knowledge, behaviours and values to cover all domains of the PCF / KSS.

Evidence gathered from a range of work must be sufficient to demonstrate how the NQSW has met the domains of the PCF and KSS at ASYE level. Assessment of progress documented across two portfolios and written assessment / presentation together is designed so that a range of evidence can be submitted which can simultaneously meet requirements across the domains.

The portfolios provide a standardised range of evidence from NQSWs practice for assessment. It will also demonstrate how support and professional development have contributed to the NQSW's progress. The portfolios should not been seen as a 'piece of work' to be completed at the end of the ASYE, but rather as ongoing records of achievement and a resource for promoting continuous professional development throughout the 12 months.

Within St Helens we have two portfolios to complete, the first one is called the Critical Reflection Log (NQSWs) and the second is called the Record of Progressive Assessment (Assessors).

Critical Reflective Log: The completed critical reflection log incorporating a Professional Development Plan. It records two types of supervision, caseload management and reflective / developmental evidence of regular supervision. There are three direct observations of practice required and three pieces of evidence (by way of feedback / observation) from other professionals. Three pieces of evidence from service users are required (by way of written feedback). Finally two 2000 word critical reflections on progressive development are required, one focusing on 0 - 6 months and the second on 6 - 12 months, with an option to complete the second one as a presentation.

The Record of Progressive Assessment:

Record of support and progressive assessment - agreement

  • 0 - 3 foundational review
  • 6 month review
  • 9 month review / progressive developmental meeting
  • 6 - 12 month final review and assessment including a recommendation of a pass, fail or defer, giving reasons.

NBThe Portfolio reports should be written contemporaneously throughout the year to evidence progress at the review meetings and identify support if required.
