How do we Learn

St Helens has an established culture of learning and promotes this consistently across the service. As outlined within our SW Academy, there are lots of opportunities for learning and we are able to support all staff no matter what their preferred style of learning is. We also support staff with neuro diverse needs to ensure that they are able to engage fully and take advantage of the learning and training offered.

St Helens has mandatory training which is required for all staff and then opportunities for training and learning across a wide spectrum of subjects and practice areas. We also have access to Research in Practice and Making Research Count which offer additional resources and sessions to support staff learning and development.

We have daily updates via Microsoft Teams' messages regarding available training and weekly information regarding Research in Practice and Making Research Count events.

Working Together to Safeguard Children 2023 provides key expectations to underpin strong multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working that are vital to identifying and responding to the needs of children and families. All students will have full access to the training available from the Safeguarding Children Partnership.

Training is offered in a variety of ways; face to face courses are still available within the authority alongside online training and virtual training.

We have training which may be for an hour at lunchtime or half or full day session. Some of training is longer term, for example Management Training. We hold regular Staff Engagement Sessions which cover a wide range of topics and are held with colleagues in Education and include the Director and Assistant Directors. We all learn together.

The Vision of the CMSWTP is to improve the life chances of children, young people, adults and their families by improving the recruitment, retention and the training and development of social workers and their practice. We work in close partnership with the Cheshire & Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership to develop and provide high quality training opportunities for practitioners within and beyond their ASYE.

We work closely with the Cheshire & Merseyside Social Work Teaching Partnership, which also provides support and opportunities for ASYEs and staff.
